Custom Home Design Process Calgary – From Consultation to Construction
The custom home design process in Calgary is an exciting journey filled with creativity, inspiration, and the thrill of bringing your dream home to life. At John Haddon Design, we make the process clear and manageable, guiding you step-by-step until your vision is ready for your builder and the city’s approval.

Step 1 – Initial Consultation & Quote
Your custom home journey begins with a one-on-one consultation with John to discuss your ideas, style, and must-have features. Bring photos, sketches, or notes—anything that communicates your vision. Using your input and our pricing guide, John will prepare a detailed quote.
Once you approve the quote, our office manager will send you a contract and initial invoice. Your project starts after we receive both the signed contract and deposit. If you have questions about pricing, timelines, or payment, our office manager is here to help.
Step 2 – Conceptual Sketches & Feedback
John then creates hand-drawn conceptual sketches (known as “check sets”) that capture your vision. You’ll review these, add notes, and suggest changes. This stage usually takes a few weeks, depending on design complexity and site survey timing.
After your review, you’ll meet again with John to refine the design. From this point forward, one of our architectural technicians will join meetings to ensure accurate translation of ideas. For inspiration, explore our portfolio of custom homes.
Step 3 – Final Working Drawings
Once you approve the final design, it moves to production. An architectural technologist creates precise AutoCAD and/or REVIT drawings—ready for permits and construction. At this stage, we issue the second invoice.
